Our 5-Day, 4-Night Stay in 2 Pool Villas.
Two nights in an Overwater Pool Villa, two nights in a Sunset One Bedroom Lagoon Pool Villa, and five days of slowing down in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
There are many beautiful resorts in the Maldives, but the experience is not only about choosing a water villa and taking a few photographs.
For our five-day, four-night stay at InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort, we divided our time between two different villas. We spent the first two nights in an Overwater Pool Villa, followed by two nights in a Sunset One Bedroom Lagoon Pool Villa.
This allowed us to experience two sides of the resort without changing islands: waking up directly over the ocean, enjoying our own private pools, having a floating breakfast in the villa, slowing down over afternoon tea, and heading out to sea in search of dolphins.
This is not a hotel introduction written from official photographs. It is our personal account of what it was like to stay here.

Arriving by seaplane from Malé
For anyone visiting the Maldives for the first time, the seaplane is more than an airport transfer. Once we left Malé, the view outside changed into endless shades of blue, with small islands and coral atolls scattered across the Indian Ocean.
Flying from Malé to Maamunagau Island by seaplane was an experience of its own.
Our first two nights: Overwater Pool Villa
We spent our first two nights in an Overwater Pool Villa.
The appeal of an overwater villa is not simply that it is built above the ocean. It is how naturally the sea becomes part of the entire stay. We woke up to it, spent the afternoon beside it and returned to it every time we stepped into our private pool.
The villa felt spacious, with a comfortable separation between the indoor and outdoor areas. Outside, the private infinity pool faced the open ocean and had its own deck and seating area.
This is not the type of room that should only be used for sleeping. The villa itself deserves to be part of the itinerary.
Floating breakfast in our private pool
A floating breakfast is one of the experiences many travellers associate with the Maldives. We had ours in the private pool of the Overwater Pool Villa, with the open sea directly in front of us.
It was certainly photogenic, but the best part was having an unhurried morning entirely to ourselves. Breakfast was delivered to the villa, and there was nowhere we needed to rush to afterwards.
Sunset One Bedroom Lagoon Pool Villa
For the final two nights, we moved into a Sunset One Bedroom Lagoon Pool Villa.
If the Overwater Pool Villa was about feeling close to the ocean, the Lagoon Pool Villa was about having a larger and more complete private space. It offered a separate bedroom and living area, a generous outdoor deck and another private pool.
As the name suggests, the villa faced the sunset. We did not need to search for a viewpoint in the evening; we could simply stay in the villa and watch the light change over the lagoon.
Staying in two villas for two nights each worked well for us. We had enough time to enjoy each room properly, while the change of setting made the five-day stay feel more varied.
One of the most memorable spaces was the bathtub facing the ocean. With a wide glass window framing the blue water outside, the view required very little decoration. The ocean did the work.
The Lighthouse: Island's signature landmark
From above, one of the easiest features to recognise on Maamunagau Island is its blue-and-white lighthouse. It is also home to The Lighthouse, one of the resort's dining venues.
The white sand, turquoise water and distinctive lighthouse make this one of the most recognisable parts of the island. The light becomes softer towards the evening, making it especially beautiful around sunset.
The daily afternoon tea
Our rate plan at the time included meals, which was an important part of the overall experience. At a private-island resort, guests spend almost the entire stay on the island, so the dining programme can make a considerable difference.
One detail we particularly enjoyed was the daily afternoon tea. It was not intended to be a heavy meal. Instead, it offered a refined selection of savoury bites, desserts and tea — a pleasant pause after a morning in the pool or by the beach.
The pool bar offered a different atmosphere. During the designated hours included in our plan, selected drinks could be ordered while we relaxed by the water. Exact inclusions and serving periods depend on the booked package, so these should be checked in advance.
Heading out in search of dolphins
Our package also included a dolphin cruise.
As with any experience involving wildlife, sightings cannot be guaranteed. Nevertheless, leaving the island by boat gave us a different view of the Maldives and a better sense of the vast ocean surrounding the resort.
If a dolphin cruise is included in your stay, avoid planning every day too tightly. Ocean activities remain subject to weather and sea conditions, and a little flexibility makes the trip much easier to enjoy.
Is it worth staying in two different villas?
If the budget allows, dividing four nights between two villa categories can be a worthwhile way to experience the resort.
Overwater Pool Villa
Best for travellers who want the classic Maldivian overwater experience, an ocean-facing private pool and a strong sense of staying above the sea.
Sunset One Bedroom Lagoon Pool Villa
Best for travellers who value more space, separate living areas and a private setting facing the evening light.
Two nights in each
This arrangement gave us enough time to enjoy both rooms without making the stay feel repetitive. The main consideration is the changeover day. Although the resort can assist with moving luggage, access to the next villa will still depend on availability and standard check-in arrangements.
Keep swimwear, sun protection and anything needed during the day in a small hand-carry bag so that the room change does not interrupt the holiday.
Five things to know before booking
1. Plan the island transfer together with your international flights
This is a private-island resort. Seaplane or alternative transfer arrangements should be confirmed when booking, including the schedule, cost and baggage allowance.
2. Meal plans are not all the same
Breakfast, half-board, full-board and promotional packages may cover different restaurants, drinks or experiences. Our stay reflects the package we booked at the time.
3. Arrange the floating breakfast early
If this is an experience you want, check the available dates, timing and any additional charges soon after arrival.
4. Confirm the room-change process
If booking two villa categories, make sure they are connected under the same stay and ask how the luggage transfer and changeover day will be handled.
5. Leave time to enjoy the villa
It is easy to fill a Maldives holiday with activities, but doing so can mean barely using the room you travelled so far to experience. Keep at least one full morning or afternoon free for the villa.

InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort is well suited to travellers who want the accommodation itself to be a major part of the holiday.
It offers the classic appeal of an overwater villa, while the larger lagoon villas provide additional space and privacy. Guests can spend an entire day beside their own pool or balance the slower moments with ocean experiences and activities around the island.
If the main goal is to visit as many different places as possible each day, a private-island holiday may not be the right travel style. But for anyone who wants to slow down and properly settle into the surroundings, five days and four nights felt just right for us.
Our final thoughts
Looking back, we remember much more than the rooms.
We remember watching the island appear beneath the seaplane, having breakfast in our own pool, slowing down for afternoon tea and looking across an almost uninterrupted stretch of blue from beside The Lighthouse.
A Maldives holiday does not always need a long list of activities. Sometimes, choosing a resort that is worth staying in — and giving yourself enough time to enjoy it — is already a complete journey.
