Health Screening for Mount Ijen

1) Why Health Screening Matters for Ijen

Indonesian medical staff performing a pre-hike health screening for a hotel guest, checking blood pressure and oxygen level before the Ijen night trek.
Pre-Hike Health Check for Mount Ijen.

The Kawah Ijen night hike is a physically demanding trek involving:

  • Midnight departure timing

  • Cold mountain temperatures

  • Steep uphill hiking sections

  • Possible exposure to sulfur gas near the crater area

To support guest safety, local authories requires a health screening before the hike so that:

  • Guests attempt the hike only after completing a proper health check

  • Screening status can be digitally verified if required by local operators or authorities

2) What’s Included for TWT Guests

If your package includes visit to Mount Ijen, your health screening is already included.

Typical screening may include:

  • Blood pressure check

  • Oxygen saturation (SpO₂) check

  • Basic health-related questions

  • Short registration / verification process

Guests may also be required to present:

  • Passport / Identification document

All screenings are conducted by trained medical personnel in accordance with local operating requirements.

3) Verification at the Ijen Entrance

At certain times, local operators or authorities may verify proof of completed screening before permitting access to the Ijen hike route. Visitors who have not completed the required screening may be denied entry.

4) Important Safety Clarification

Health screening helps reduce risk, but it does not guarantee a risk-free climb.

Access to Ijen remains subject to operational decisions based on:

  • Local authority regulations

  • Weather and visibility conditions

  • Volcanic activity advisories

  • On-site safety assessments by local teams

The Window Travel reserves the right to adjust, delay, or cancel access when safety conditions require it.

5) Privacy & Personal Data

Any personal information collected during the screening process is handled in accordance with:

  • Local operational requirements

  • Relevant authority verification procedures

Collected information is used solely for screening verification and trip operational purposes where required.

6) If a Guest Does Not Meet the Recommended Screening Standard?

The guests may still choose whether to proceed at their own discretion and entirely at their own risk.

In such cases, The Window Travel strongly recommends using the available manual trolley transport service (“Ijen cart”) for the ascent and descent (Estimated local fee: approximately IDR 1,500,000 round trip, actual pricing is determined by local operators and may vary without prior notice.)

For guests with borderline screening results, reduced stamina, or any uncertainty about physical condition, The Window Travel does not recommend descending further into the crater area to view the blue fire, as this section involves:

  • Steeper and more unstable terrain

  • Reduced visibility during dark-hour conditions

  • Increased physical exertion

  • Closer exposure to sulfur gas

Final participation decisions remain subject to:

  • Local medical screening advice

  • On-site operational assessments

  • Weather and volcanic safety conditions

  • Guest’s personal acceptance of all associated risks

The Window Travel reserves the right to advise against participation where safety concerns are present.
